Blue Hens Look to Extend Their Winning Streak to Five as Delaware Takes on La Salle in the Second Round of the Liberty Bell Classic
NEWARK, Del. – After sweeping conference rival Northeastern over the weekend, the University of Delaware baseball team will look to continue their winning ways as they host La Salle at Bob Hannah Stadium today in the second round of the Liberty Bell Classic.
Delaware (14-14) freshman Kevin Milley (1-1, 2.65 ERA, 17.0 IP, 12 SO) is scheduled to take the mound for the Blue Hens. The southpaw kicked off the Blue Hen winning streak with a stellar performance in round one of the Liberty Bell Classic against Temple last week. The freshman earned his first career collegiate win by pitching five scoreless innings, giving up only three hits in Delaware’s 12-4 win over the Owls.
While the Blue Hen pitching had been very effective during their current winning streak, the offense has also been clicking on all cylinders. Delaware has scored eight or more runs in five of their last eight games.
Norm Donkin has been the most consistent Blue Hen at the plate. The junior leads Delaware in hits (38), runs (20), doubles (11) and stolen bases (9). Donkin also put down a perfect bunt on a suicide squeeze to knock in the winning run in the 12th inning of Delaware’s 1-0 win over Northeastern on Friday.
Joe Giacchino has also provided a lift at the top of the order. The junior is batting .314, leads the team in triples with four, and is currently riding an eight-game hitting streak.
La Salle (8-19) brings a high-powered offense to Bob Hannah Stadium. The Explorers have six players who bat over .300 for the season and rank fourth in the Atlantic 10 in team batting average. Junior Justin Korenblatt is fifth in the Atlantic 10 in total hits and leads the team in hits, batting average, triples and stolen bases.
Pitching, however, has been a struggle for La Salle. The Explorers are last in the Atlantic 10 with 6.89 team ERA. LHP Freddy Andujar (0-6, 30.70 ERA, 7.1 IP, 8 SO) is scheduled to make the start for the Explorers.
First pitch of today’s game is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Bob Hannah Stadium.
