Sammi Shivock will begin her third year on the University of Delaware softball staff as an assistant coach during the 2018 season.

During her first season in Newark Shivock helped lead the Blue Hens to a 30-21 record, while Delaware earned its first trip to the CAA Tournament since 2013 by finishing fifth in the conference with a 9-9 league mark. Delaware then defeated Elon in the first game of the tournament, recording the school’s first CAA Tournament victory since 2004.

UD’s 30 wins tied for the fifth most in a single season and marked the second time in program history the Blue Hens recorded consecutive 30-win campaigns, along with 1999 and 2000. The season included a series win over Hofstra, as Delaware snapped a 27-game losing streak to the Pride and posted the first series win over its rival since the 2006 season.

Delaware led the CAA and set a school single season record with 101 stolen bases, and ranked second in program history with 255 runs scored and 33 homers, finishing behind only the 2015 squad.

Mariah Kondravy was named first team All-CAA, the first Blue Hen to earn first team all-league honors since the 2010 season, while Leanna Gearhart, Gabby Klecko and Anna Steinmetz were second team honorees. Delaware put four players on the All-CAA teams for the first time since 2004, while Steinmetz became the third Blue Hen in school history to earn conference Rookie of the Year accolades.

Kondravy was a second team All-Northeast Region selection following the year, becoming the fourth UD player to earn multiple All-Region honors, while Steinmetz was tabbed honorable mention All-Region.

Gearhart set UD single season records and led the CAA with 54 runs scored and 44 stolen bases, and ranked among the top 10 in the nation in both categories. Meanwhile Steinmetz tied Kondravy for the UD single season mark with 15 homers, which tied for the CAA lead and tied for fourth among Division I freshmen. Also Carolyn Szymanski was selected first team CoSIDA Academic All-District 2, the first Blue Hen to earn that award since 2009.

Last year Delaware finished with a 24-29 mark, and advanced to the CAA Tournament for the second straight year. Steinmetz earned first team All-CAA honors, while Kondravy was a second team All-CAA and All-Region honoree.

Shivock, a native of New Castle, Del. who attended Red Lion Christian Academy, came to Newark in the summer of 2016 after serving as an assistant coach at Arcadia University during that spring. While with the Knights, Shivock assisted with daily activities on and off the playing field under head coach Sarah Norris. Shivock prepared practice schedules and ran individual practice sessions, and also helped prepare team travel, assisted in recruiting, and helped run clinics and camps.

Shivock earned a degree in sport management from Liberty University in 2014, and was a four-year member of the Flames softball team. She currently ranks among the school’s top 10 leaders in runs, RBI, home runs and walks, and set the Liberty freshman home runs mark during the 2011 season. She helped lead the Flames to the Big South title as a freshman, when she was named to the All-Tournament Team.

Shivock was selected the team’s Rookie of the Year in 2011 and MVP in 2012, while she earned second team All-Region honors as a junior. A Dean’s List student, she was twice selected to the Capital One CoSIDA Academic All-District Team and was named an NFCA All-American Scholar during all four years.

Following graduation, Shivock served a summer internship with Ripken Youth Baseball where she instructed and coached youth baseball clinics and camps.

“I’m very excited to have Sammi join the Blue Hen softball coaching staff,” Seneca said at the time of Shivock’s hiring. “She brings great enthusiasm and experience at the Division I level, so she will be a wonderful asset to our student-athletes. Sammi is a Delaware native with close ties to the community, which will also greatly benefit our program.”
