A former standout swimmer at the University of Maryland, he previously coached at George Mason and Greensboro College.

Budde (pronounced "buddy") joined the Blue Hens staff after serving most recently as head coach and aquatics director at NCAA Division III member Greensboro (N.C.) for seven seasons between 2007-14. He is the winningest coach in Greensboro College history.

He also served as assistant coach at George Mason University in 2004-07, was aquatics director at the Gilman School in Baltimore in 2000-04, and served as interim water polo coach at Maryland in 2003-04.

While at Greensboro, he coached an NCAA championship qualifier, an Old Dominion Athletic Conference Swimmer of the Year, and was named Atlantic State Coach of the Year in 2009 and 2011. He has also served as a swim club coach for several programs, most recently with the Suburban Seahawks Club (Newtown Square, Pa.) in 2014-15.

Budde, who earned his degree in biology from the University of Maryland in 1999, was a high school All-American and Pennsylvania state runner-up in the 200 and 500 freestyle events while at Cumberland Valley High School before continuing his career at Maryland.

While at Maryland, he served as team captain for two seasons and set the school record in the 1,650 freestyle. He was a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) and earned Maryland’s Diehl Award for dedication twice.

He and his wife, Dr. Melissa Adams-Budde, reside in West Grove, Pa. with their two sons, Klete and Brody. Melissa is a professor at West Chester University.
