Delaware Menís Golfers Tie For Ninth Place at Elon Phoenix Invitational

BURLINGTON, N.C. -- The University of Delaware men’s golf squad fired a 288 score during Tuesday’s final round of the Elon Phoenix Invitational to tie for ninth place at the tournament.
Gardner-Webb shot a sizzling 830 to win the team title, while Loyola (Md.) finished second at 848 and Elon placed third with an 849 score. The Blue Hens, who posted rounds of 284 and 289 on Monday, tied for ninth place out of 15 squads with an 861 three-round total.
Delaware junior Jack Gianniny carded an even par 71 during his final round on the par 71, 6,867-yard Alamance Country Club course, tying for 18th place in the individual standings with a two under par 68-72-71-211. Senior Marc Oliveri enjoyed the lowest round of the day by a Blue Hen with a one under par 70, as he tied for 29th place with a one over par 72-72-70-214.
Junior Blaine Lafferty, who shot a two over par 74 on Tuesday, carded a three over par 72-70-74-216 to finish in a tie for 36th place at the invitational. Sophomore Mark Benevento finished in 66th place with a 10 over par 72-75-76-223, while junior Kieran Purcell tied for 67th place with an 11 over par 76-75-73-224.
Gianniny, Lafferty and Benevento all set personal career-lows for 54-hole scores, while Oliveri tied his career-low set earlier this fall at the Colgate’s Alex Lagowitz Memorial Invitational.
Eric Edwards of George Mason, Jake Leavitt of Elon and Jose Montano of North Carolina each fired a 10 under par to finish in a three-way tie for the individual title.
The Blue Hens conclude their fall season on Oct. 23-25 when they compete in the Old Dominion/Outer Banks Invitational at Kilmarlic Golf Course in Powells Point, N.C.
