Jones Leads Blue Hen Women Harriers to 17th Place Finish at NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regionals
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Competing against the top teams in the region, the University of Delaware women’s cross country squad posted a solid 17th place team finish at the NCAA Division I Women’s Mid-Atlantic Cross Country Regionals held Friday morning at Penn State University.
Delaware’s point total of 507 points placed 17th overall in a 28-team field that featured the likes of Penn State, Pittsburgh, West Virginia, Villanova, and Georgetown.
Blue Hen freshman Mackenzie Jones led all Delaware runners once again as she covered the six-kilometer course in a time of 22:02 to place 60th overall, but ninth among all freshmen. She has led Delaware in every race she has competed in this season, including an 18th place showing at last week’s Colonial Athletic Association Championships held at Delaware.
Penn State, led by overall champion Tessa Barrett, earned the team title with a score of 36 as the Nittany Lions placed three runners in the top five. Barrett covered the course in a time of 20:00. Villanova placed second in the team standings with 93 points followed by Penn, West Virginia, and Georgetown.
In addition to Jones, Delaware had six other runners compete on Friday. Liz McGroarty placed 87th (22:22), Betsy Erlanger was 94th (22:34), Molly Doyle was 141st (23:15), Analise Kaminski was 142nd (23:18), Valerie Romero was 172nd (24:15), and Gabby Alaimo was 181st (24:42).
Delaware will close out its 2016 season next Saturday, Nov. 19, when the Hens take part in the Eastern College Athletic Conference Championships at Van Cortlandt State Park in the Bronx, N.Y.
