Erlanger Leads the Way as Delaware Places Sixth at Season-Ending ECAC Championships

BRONX, N.Y.  -- The University of Delaware women’s cross country squad closed out the 2016 season Saturday morning as the Blue Hens posted a sixth place team finish at the Eastern College Athletics Conference (ECAC) Championships at Van Cortlandt State Park.

The Blue Hens, who last week placed 17th out of 28 teams at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regionals and was sixth out of nine teams the week before at the Colonial Athletic Association championships, posted a team score of 137 to place sixth in the seven-team field.

Delaware’s sixth place finish was its highest at the meet since the 2013 squad placed fourth at the event.

Leading Delaware Saturday morning was senior co-captain Betsy Erlanger who placed 19th overall with a time of 19:14.23 over the five kilometer course. A 26th place finisher at the CAA Championships two weeks ago, she led the team for the first time this season but for the fifth time in her career.

Other top finishers for Delaware were junior Liz McGroarty in 23rd place in 19:24, freshman Mackenzie Jones placed 25th in 19:27, freshman Analise Kaminski was 34th in 19:55, freshman Stephanie Bazan was 36th in 19:58; and sophomore Emily Paolucci was 44th in 20:09. A total of 14 runners competed for Delaware.

James Madison’s Carol Strock won the race with a time of 18:03, easily outdistancing runner-up Megan McGarrity of Rider by 18 seconds.
