Delaware’s Cory Camp Competes in 500 Freestyle at USA Swimming AT&T Nationals Thursday
ATLANTA -- The University of Delaware began action the USA Swimming AT&T Winter Nationals on Thursday morning with Cory Camp competing in the 500 yard freestyle event at Georgia Tech’s McAulay Aquatic Center.
Camp, a senior co-captain from Olney, Md. (Blake High School), swam to a time of 4:40.78 to place seventh in his heat and 40th overall. The meet includes the top swimmers in the United States.
Max Irwin of Indiana University posted the top time with a clocking of 4:19.40 in his heat. Camp’s carer best in the event is a school record time of 4:24.05 set in 2015.
Camp will continue action at the meet on Friday when he competes in the 200 freestyle trials on starting at 10:30 a.m.
Asher Kiely, a sophomore from South Kingstown, R.I. (South Kingstown HS), is also competing for the Blue Hens at the meet this week. He will be taking part in the 100 backstroke trials on Friday beginning at 11:11 a.m. and in the 200 backstroke trials on Saturday beginning at 9:20 a.m.
Camp, the Colonial Athletic Association 500 freestyle champion in 2015 and runner-up in the event in 2016, swam in three events at the 2015 USA Winter Nationals and had a top finish of 34th in the 400 individual medley. He also competed in the 1,500 freestyle and 400 freestyle.
Kiely placed fourth in both the 200 medley relay and in the 400 medley relay at the 2016 CAA Championships.
