MLS Release

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Following a stellar career at the University of Delaware, forward Guillermo Delgado (Tres Cantos, Spain/Jose Luis Sampedro) was recently invited to participate in the 2017 adidas MLS Player Combine, held January 8-12 in Los Angeles.

“I am thrilled to have this opportunity to make it to the next level,” remarked Delaware’s only male four-time All-American.  “This is an event for the best of the best collegiate players. I am excited for the competition and to be able to show everyone what I am capable of doing.”

Delgado is one of 53 NCAA Division I college players selected for the combine.  All invitees will be eligible for selection in the 2017 SuperDraft presented by adidas, which will take place on Friday, January 13 at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

“The MLS Combine is the place that every collegiate player wants to be at next month,” Delaware head coach Ian Hennessy stated.  “When you consider the caliber of the players and institutions represented, it is terrific to see the University of Delaware flag planted in the midst.  While we’ve had many MLS scouts at our games over the past years due to the program’s recent success, this event will have every MLS head coach and GM in the country to see these players first hand.  It will be the best opportunity for Guillermo to impress everyone at once and we are all excited for him.”

Delgado, the 2016 CAA Player of the Year, earned NSCAA All-America recognition for the fourth consecutive year, landing a spot on the Third Team. He earned his fourth consecutive selection to the All-CAA First Team and fourth straight spot on the NSCAA All-Midwest Region First Team after posting 12 goals, eight assists and 32 points to lead the Blue Hens to the CAA Championship and berth in the NCAA Championship.

The nation's active career leader in points (117) and goals (49) finished his four-year career in a Blue Hens uniform as the school's all-time leader in five statistical categories: points, goals, assists (19), game-winning goals (17) and shots (282). In addition, he made his mark in the CAA record book, finishing his career tied for fifth all-time in goal and sixth in points, becoming the first player since 2003 to record at least 40 goals and 100 points.

Delgado joins Evans Frimpong ’12 (at left) as the lone Blue Hens to ever be invited to the MLS Combine.  Frimpong was drafted ninth overall in the 2012 MLS Supplemental Draft by the Chicago Fire.  He most recently was a member of the Oklahoma City Energy and Puerto Rico FC.
