KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The University of Delaware softball team opened play at the Tennessee Invitational with a 9-1 loss to Southeastern Louisiana Friday afternoon at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium.

The Lions (9-10) took control of the contest early, taking advantage of three Blue Hen errors to score six runs in the bottom of the first inning before an out was recorded.

Maddie Edmonston led off with a single, and after she stole second, she scored the first run of the day when Kinsey Nichols reached on an error by UD centerfielder Emily Neal. Kalyn Watts then drove home Nichols with a single, and following another error, Ali McCoy delivered an RBI single to make it a 3-0 game. After another run scored when Mattie Ott reached on a throwing error by shortstop Leanna Gearhart, Mychal Truxillo doubled home two more to put Southeastern Louisiana up six.

Delaware (2-9) got on the board in the top of the second when Sarah Coyne singled to rightcenter to drive home Giovanna Kolofer, but the Lions got the run right back in the bottom half as Watts led off the frame with a home run.

Southeastern Louisiana added two more unearned runs in the fourth inning, and the game ended due to the mercy rule after the Blue Hens went down in order during the top of the fifth.

Rachel Hayes (3-4) allowed one run on three hits to earn the win for the Lions, while UD starter Jordan Cargile (2-5) took the loss after allowing six runs, just one earned, in the first inning.

Delaware continues play at the tournament on Saturday when the Blue Hens face Ohio University at 9 a.m.
