Delaware Drops 9-4 Verdict To Ohio University at Tennessee Invitational

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The University of Delaware softball team fell to Ohio University, 9-4, Saturday morning at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium on the second day of the Tennessee Invitational.
The Bobcats (11-2) opened the scoring during the top of the second when Mikayla Cooper led off the inning with a home run to rightfield. Two outs later Ohio loaded the bases on two singles and an error, before Jamie Wren legged out an infield single to drive home the second run. Natalie Alvarez then followed by lacing a two-run single to right, extending the margin to 4-0.
The Bobcats added four more runs in the top of the third, as Taylor Saxton knocked home a run with an infield single and one batter later Wren stroked a three-run double to right.
With two outs in the bottom of the third Leanna Gearhart legged out an infield single, and after she moved to second on a Mattie Nuccio single, she scored the Blue Hens’ first run when Mariah Kondravy smacked a double to left. Anna Steinmetz then ripped a two-run single to left, cutting the margin to 8-3.
The Blue Hens (2-10) scored their final run in the bottom of the fifth as Gearhart led off with a single, stole second, moved to third on a Nuccio single, and scored on a Bobcats error.
Ohio then closed the scoring during the top of the seventh on a run-scoring double by Casie Hutchinson.
Gearhart, Nuccio and Steinmetz all finished with two hits for Delaware, while starting pitcher Kat Morris (0-5) took the loss after allowing eight runs, five earned, on 10 hits in 2.2 innings of work.
The Blue Hens conclude action at the tournament on Sunday when Delaware faces Bradley at 9 a.m. and the 15th-ranked Volunteers at 2 p.m.
