Patten's Early Blast Leads Delaware Past Rider 8-5 in Game 1
NEWARK, Del. - Delaware first base Nick Patten blasted a three-run home run in the first inning second baseman Jeremy Ake knocked in two runs to lead the Blue Hens to an 8-5 victory over Rider University in the first game of the second day of the Bob Hannah Invitational Monday morning at Bob Hannah Stadium.
Rider took a quick 2-0 lead on a first-inning home run by Riley Mihalik but the Hens came right back to take the lead for good in the bottom of the inning as Patten hit his first home run of the season over the leftfield fence with two outs.
The Hens then added two runs in the third on a two-run double by Ake and packed on two more in the fifth to stay on top.
Delaware righthander Nick Spadafino (1-0) picked up the win, allowing four runs on three hits in five innings of work.
Delaware faces Delaware State in the second game of the twinbill Monday at 2:30 p.m.
