Blue Hens Cruise to 7-0 Triumph Over Coppin State
NEWARK, Del. – On a chilly afternoon at the Delaware Field House Outdoor Courts, the Blue Hens men’s tennis team soared to victory in dominating fashion as Delaware trounced Coppin State, 7-0, Monday afternoon.
The Hens (3-6) opened the afternoon by sweeping the team doubles point for the first time this season.
Senior Roy Cheng (Shatin, Hong Kong/Sentinel Secondary) and junior Asdrubal Marcano (Kralendijk, Bonaire/Sagemont (Fla.)) paired for the first win of the afternoon in their 6-1 decision over Gavin Lewis and Andres Diaz in the second flight.
Freshmen Dominick Perez (Bethesda, Md./Gonzaga) and Sam Oberholtzer (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield Memorial) clinched the team point in the third slot by defeating Andre Sturniolo and Zaipo Oula, 6-3. Senior co-captain Tyler Flematti (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) and junior Colin Wong (Shah Alam, Selangor, Malaysia/SMK Kota Kemuning) followed with the 6-4 win versus Gabriel Franca and Christian Duchnak in top flight play.
In No. 2 singles action, sophomore co-captain Blaise Casselbury (Lititz, Pa./Lancaster Country Day School) controlled the 6-0, 6-0 decision over Diaz while Perez cruised to the 6-1, 6-1 win in No. 3 singles.
Freshman Scott Cameron (Edmond, Okla./Edmond Memorial) captured the team victory for the Blue Hens in the No. 6 spot by defeating Oula, 6-3, 6-0.
Cheng also easily handled his opponent with the 6-2, 6-1 win over Franca while Marcano completed the 6-1, 6-4 victory against Lewis.
Wong wrapped the afternoon with the hard-fought 7-5, 7-6 (1) triumph versus Duchnak.
