PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The University of Delaware will once again be represented at the upcoming World Maccabiah games, held July 4-18, in Israel as current senior Kayla Devlin (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) and Alexis Esbitt '10 (Hockessin, Del./Sanford) were selected for the Open Women's Field Hockey squad.

“This is a great opportunity and privilege for Alexis and Kayla to represent themselves and our program at the Maccabiah Games,” remarked Delaware head coach Rolf van de Kerkhof.  “I know everyone within the University of Delaware and Blue Hens field hockey family wish them all the best and hope they enjoy this international sports event and experience.”

Van de Kerkhof continued, “As a program, we talk about creating opportunities to further develop as people by considering traveling abroad and meeting other people and cultures.  Alexis and Kayla are prime examples of taking advantage of the development opportunities by preparing for and attending the Maccabiah Games this summer.  We believe they will come back as better people and look forward to sharing their experiences gained and lessons learned with current and former Blue Hens.  Our program enjoys learning from others and what is better than learning from others that are already part of our UDFH family!”

Devlin previously contributed in the 19th World Maccabiah Games during the summer of 2013 as a member of Team USA.  The defender and her teammates finished the competition with a record of 2-1-1 to earn the bronze medal.

Maccabi USA will bring in a team of 1,100-plus athletes who will join 8,750 Jewish athletes from 80 countries, participating in 43 different sports, to compete in the 20th World Maccabiah Games.

Since 1931, more than 62,000 athletes have participated in the Maccabiah Games in a celebration of Jewish Strength and Solidarity.
