Jefferson Awards

NEWARK, Del.  --  University of Delaware senior cross country and track & field captain Gabby Alaimo was honored for her numerous community services activities Wednesday night as she was presented with an annual City of Newark Jefferson Award.

Alaimo was one of several individuals and groups honored by Newark Mayor Polly Sierer (at left in photo) for volunteering countless hours in the community and for their commitment to making Newark a better place for its citizens. The event was held at Grain Craft Bar & Kitchen on Main Street.

Among those on hand to help celebrate Alaimo’s accomplishments were her parents, Jim and Carolyn Alaimo; her sister, Natalie; University of Delaware Director of Athletics and Recreation Services Chrissi Rawak, Senior Associate AD for Student Services and Sports Administration and Senior Woman Administrator Jenn Judy; and Assistant Director for Student Services & Leadership Benjamin Oser.

“This is really special,” said Alaimo. “Hearing about what some of these other award winners have done to serve Newark for so many decades is really inspiring. It means a lot to be considered after being here for only a few years. I’ve always been happy to give back.”

Alaimo, a native of Bridgewater, N.J. (Bridgewater-Raritan High School), is a four-year member of the UD women’s cross country and indoor and outdoor track & field teams and is an honor student as an exercise science major with an emphasis in biomechanics and motor control with minors in integrated design and Italian.

She serves as president of the UD Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), is a UD Student Alumni Ambassador, and has been active as a volunteer with Special Olympics Delaware through the Polar Plunge and UD Student-Athlete Talent Show events.

Alaimo has also volunteered in several campus-wide drives; she helped collect shoes for the MORE foundation, collected cans for the CAA Food Drive, and volunteered at the Be the Match bone marrow registry. Through SAAC, she also helped plan, create promotional media, and orchestrate the CAA Food Drive. In addition, she and her fellow SAAC members organized the first and second annual Reps for Kids events, which supports the B+ Foundation for childhood cancer research and support. She has also been active with the University of Delaware’s celebration of National Women and Girls in Sports Day.

Among the recent City of Newark Jefferson Award recipients were the University of Delaware basketball team and former UD women’s basketball All-American and Olympic Gold Medalist Elena Delle Donne.
