Blue Hens Head South For Crucial Weekend Series With Charleston

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. -- The University of Delaware softball team will head south this weekend for a crucial Colonial Athletic Association series with the College of Charleston.
The Blue Hens and Cougars will play a 2 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday and a 12:30 single game on Sunday at Patriots Point, with live stat links available for all three games.
Delaware enters the weekend with a 17-21 overall record, and the Blue Hens currently reside in sixth place in the league standings with a 5-7 mark. UD is just one game behind Charleston, which brings a 26-18 overall record and a 6-6 league mark into the series. The top five teams advance to the CAA Tournament in Harrisonburg, Va. on May 10-12.
Blue Hen sophomore catcher Anna Steinmetz continues to lead UD and ranks seventh in the CAA with a .381 batting average, and she has drilled a league-high 11 home runs. Giovanna Kolofer is hitting .347 for the Blue Hens, while Leanna Gearhart has stolen a conference-best 23 bases. Emily Neal ranks third on the squad with a .333 batting average for Delaware, which is hitting .301 as a team.
Taylor DuPree paces the Cougars attack with a .385 batting average, while she leads the CAA with 57 hits and ranks second with 21 stolen bases. Taylor Belfiore is hitting .360 with a team-high seven home runs for Charleston, while Madi Brown is batting .316 and Jordin Jones has posted a team-high 30 RBI. Izzy Berouty leads the Cougars pitching staff with nine wins and a 2.27 earned run average.
Charleston leads the all-time series with Delaware, 7-3, and took three of the four meetings last year including one in the CAA Tournament.
Following the series, the Blue Hens remain on the road next week with a Wednesday doubleheader at Delaware State and a weekend set at Elon.
