LEXINGTON, Ky. -- It was a “just miss” performance for University of Delaware junior distance runner Liz McGroarty Thursday afternoon as she opened action at the NCAA Women's Outdoor Track & Field East Regionals with a 29th place finish in the 1,500 meter run at the University of Kentucky Outdoor Track & Field Complex.

McGroarty, a nursing major from Glen Mills, Pa. (Garnet Valley High School), ran a time of 4:25.09 to place ninth in her heat and 29th overall, but just missed earning one of 24 spots in the quarterfinals.

Her time of 4:25.09 was just .55 off her career best and just .91 shy of the final qualifying spot that was secured by Kaitlin Hans of Princeton, who ran a time of 4:24.18. Jamie Morrissey of Michigan had the best time of the day with a clocking of 4:17.57.  The top five finishers in each heat and the next top four best times advanced to Saturday's quarterfinals.

McGroarty capped an outstanding season that saw her place second in the 1,500 meters at the Colonial Athletic Association Championships on May 6 and earn All-East honors at the ECAC Championships on May 14 at Princeton. She also was third in the 800 meters at the CAA Championships. She ranks No. 3 all-time at Delaware in the 1,500 meters.

Delaware will continue action at the East Regionals on Friday when junior Sarah Hillman competes in the discus throw at 2 p.m.
Hillman (Polytech/Dover, Del.), who captured the CAA discus title and was third at the ECAC meet earlier this month,  has ranked among the nation's top discus throwers all season long and her UD school-record distance of 186-feet, 2-inches ranks fourth in the field at the NCAA East Regionals and No. 9 nationally. Should Hillman finish among the top 12 on Friday, she would advance to the national championships to be held June 7-10 at the University of Oregon in Eugene.

In addition to capturing the discus title at the CAA Championships and being named the meet's Outstanding Field Performer, Hillman also earned All-East honors by placing third in the discus and was also 24th in the shot put at the ECAC meet at Princeton. She has won three meet titles this season and also placed ninth in the discus at the Penn Relays in April.
