CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The University of Delaware baseball squad dropped its season opener 6-3 Friday night from CSU Ballpark. In the game, Delaware was led by right fielder Kyle Baker who went 2-4 with a pair of RBI. Senior Nick Spadafino pitched the first two-and-two-thirds allowing nine hits and five runs.

Delaware received strong performances from lefty Matt Hornich (3.1 IP, 1 ER) and righty Cole Benjamin (2.0 IP, 0 ER, 3K) in relief of Spadafino (2.2 IP, 5ER). The Blue Hens (0-1) fell behind 3-0 after two innings, but Baker’s two-RBI single cut the Charleston Southern (1-0) lead to just 3-2 heading to the bottom of the third.

In the home half, the Buccaneers tacked on a pair of runs to extend their lead to 5-2, chasing Spadafino. Delaware added a run in the fifth before Charleston Southern added its final run in the sixth.

CSU junior Nik Constantakos fired five innings (three runs, two earned) to earn the victory, while Cody Smith nailed down the save.

Delaware and Charleston Southern will take the field for game two of the weekend Saturday at 4 p.m. Delaware junior Kyle Hinton will face CSU righty Ryan Stoudemire.

Delaware head coach Jim Sherman

"Tonight was just an okay opener for us, as we didn't get generate much offense. The positive from tonight is we did get five great innings from Hornich and Benjamin out of the bullpen. Hopefully tomorrow we can get our bats going a bit."
