NEW YORK -- The University of Delaware women’s indoor track & field team will begin its 2017-18 season this Saturday, Dec. 2, when the Blue Hens take part in the College of New Jersey Indoor Open at the New York City Armory.

The action will get underway at 6 p.m. with competition held in 30 men’s and women’s events, including the weight throw, shot put, long jump, triple jump, high jump, pole vault, 60 meters, 60 meter hurdles, 300 meters, 600 meters, 1,000 meters, mile, sprint medley relay, and 4 x 400 meter relay.

The Blue Hens, who will be making their earliest indoor season appearance since the 2011-12 season.

Delaware head coach Wendy McFarlane-Smith, beginning her 10th season at the helm of the Blue Hens, will take nine student-athletes to the meet, including Stephanie Bazan, Jeanette Bendolph, Madeline Berman, Liz McGroarty, Michaela Meyer, Emily Paolucci, Roxanne Ramirez, Valerie Romero, and Angie Spadaccini.

Saturday’s action will be one of 10 competitions for the Blue Hens this winter culminating in the annual Eastern College Athletic Conference Championships March 2-4 at Boston University.

After this weekend’s action, Delaware will take a month-long break before returning to action Jan. 5 at the Wagner Invitational at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island, N.Y.

Delaware will continue action Jan. 13 at the Towson Tiger Invitational at the N.Y. City Armory; Jan. 20 at the Gulden Invitational at Bucknell University; Jan. 26 at the Armory Collegiate Invitational in New York City; Jan. 27 at the John Covert Classic at Lehigh; Feb. 3 at the Villanova Invitational at Ocean Breeze; Feb. 8 at the Navy Invitational; and Feb. 17 at the Princeton Invitational.
