NEWARK, Del. – University of Delaware shortstop Leanna Gearhart has been named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District 2 Softball First Team, the organization announced last week.

Gearhart, a senior from Robbinsville, N.J., is an honors student as an exercise science major at Delaware. She becomes the 10th Blue Hen softball player in school history to earn first team Academic All-District honors.

Gearhart started all but three games for the Blue Hens this season, including 35 at shortstop. She led the team with 30 runs scored and four triples, and stole a league-high 23 bases. Additionally, Gearhart ranked third on the team with a .300 batting average and 42 hits.

Gearhart ended her career as Delaware’s leader with 157 runs scored, 24 triples and 111 steals. The CAA career record holder in triples and steals, she is also tied for third in UD history with 205 hits and 201 games played.

To be eligible for the award, student-athletes must carry a 3.3 or better GPA, be a starter or key reserve and have at least sophomore academic standing. District 2 includes all NCAA Division I schools in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, West Virginia, Washington, D.C. and Kentucky. The teams are selected by a vote of sports information directors from schools in the region. All first-team selections advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America ballot, as first, second and third team All-America honorees will be selected later this month.
