VILLANOVA, Pa. -- The University of Delaware women’s soccer team dropped the season opener Sunday afternoon at Villanova, falling 2-1 in overtime.

Delaware (0-1) scored just two minutes into the second half, when Jillian Vassallo made a beautiful run, eluding Villanova (1-0) goalie Emily Harris. Delaware enjoyed the slim 1-0 lead until the 69th minute when Emma Firenze chipped a ball over the head of UD goalkeeper Kailyn Rekos.

Delaware and Villanova played an even second half, but the Blue Hens had the best chance when Riley Dixon (at left) sent an uncontested shot just over the bar. The shot just missed the corner of the net.

In overtime, Villanova scored off a throw-in deep into the Blue Hens' third. Amanda Vocelka tallied the assist while Jasmine Ruiz scored the winner.

The shots ended deadlocked at 11 while Rekos had seven saves to Harris’ two.

The Blue Hens return to the pitch Thursday night against top-five Georgetown. Kickoff from Grant Field is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Head Coach Mike Barroqueiro
“I thought we came out of halftime, and executed what we had talked about in the break. The ladies sticking to our principles led to the early goal. I thought we were really good in the first part of the second half, but as the game wore on we died a bit physically. Our legs got heavy, and we failed to execute in the final third, which cost us the game. Easily four or five chances in the box, when you don’t put the ball on frame, you can't score.”

On Next Opponent Georgetown:
“Today in spells, I thought there were a lot of people who were impressive. I thought when we were good it was a combined effort. When we were poor it was lapses in focus and concentration. Georgetown is a very good team and they’re very well coached. They are good at what they do. We need to be more organized and rebound quickly. We need to find a way to be competitive against a really tough team.”

• Vassallo scored the first goal of the season for the second consecutive season
• Delaware and Villanova met in the season opener for the second consecutive season
• The Blue Hens have lost five straight matchups to Villanova
