BETHLEHEM, Pa. --  The  University of Delaware women's cross country squad opened up a promising 2017 campaign Friday evening as the Blue Hens placed three runners among the top 20 finishes and posted a fourth place team finish at the Lehigh Invitational at Lehigh Goodman Campus Cross Country Course.

The Blue Hens posted a score of 87 points to finish fourth in the seven-team Division I field. West Virginia, led by individual champion Maggie Drazba (20:58.55) won the team title with 21 points followed by Rutgers (53), and host Lehigh (73). Delaware bested LaSalle, NJIT, and Fairleigh Dickinson. West Chester won the non-Division I race.

Delaware placed three runners in the top 20. UD sophomore Roxanne Ramirez, who ran for the Delaware Club team a year ago, placed Delaware with a 15th place showing in her collegiate varsity debut, covering the six-kilometer course in 22:44.55. Junior Jeanette Bendolph placed 17th (22:46.99) and freshman Susanna Weir finished 18th (22:53.73).

"Today was a good day," said Delaware head coach Wendy McFarlane-Smith, who began her sixth season at the helm of the program. "We are really excited and proud of our progress in training so far this season. Thanks to Coach Ryan (Waite) and his efforts in coaching the ladies."

Delaware will be in action again on Saturday when the Blue Hens take part at the Elon (N.C.) Invitational beginning at 8:15 a.m. The meet will be held at the same site of the Colonial Athletic Association Championships on Oct. 28.
