VILLANOVA, Pa. – The Blue Hens men’s tennis team kicked off play Friday at the Seventh Annual Villanova Invitational in successful fashion with five victories.
In matchups that featured one doubles and two singles matches against one opponent, Delaware swept Rider, 3-0, while defeating Loyola, 2-1.
Making their Blue Hens debut, freshman Justice Jones (Laurel, Md./JTCC School) paired with sophomore Curran Verma (Gaithersburg, Md./Laurel Springs) to post the 6-4 doubles win versus Rider’s Griffen Clark and Brandon Gildea. Jones followed with a 6-1, 7-6 (4) decision over Clark while Verma routed Gildea, 8-2.
Sophomore Luis Marcano (Kralendijk, Bonaire/Sagemont (Fla.)) and freshman Nathan Benyowitz (Los Angeles, Calif./Shalhevet) opened the day with a 6-1 doubles victory against Loyola’s Brian Hoffarth and Gower. Benyowitz then earned a hard-fought 6-4, 6-7 (4), 10-8 win over Hoffarth while Marcano fell to Gower, 8-1.
