NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware volleyball team dropped its 2017 home opener to Northeastern, 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-20), in a Colonial Athletic Association match Friday night at the Bob Carpenter Center.

The Huskies, who won their fifth consecutive match, improved to 10-6 overall and 3-0 in league play. The Blue Hens, playing their first match at home following 12 straight contests outside of Newark, fell to 3-10 overall and 1-2 in the conference.

UD sophomore outside hitter Maria Bellinger led Delaware with 10 kills on the night, while Brooke Robertson added nine kills and six digs. Courtnie Roberts handed out 16 assists, while Maddie Judge made a team-best 12 digs.

Amy Underdown paced Northeastern with 13 kills, while Athena Ardila added 10 of her own.

The teams were tied 10-10 in the first set and UD used a four-point run to pull within 20-17, but the Huskies took five of the next seven points to win the opening set. The Blue Hens led 17-13 in the second frame, before Northeastern closed the set on a 12-4 run to take a two-set lead. NU then raced out to a 9-3 advantage in the third set and never looked back to close out the win.

"Tonight was a tough match for us. We did some good things in flashes but couldn't extend that momentum. Northeastern is a very solid team; they're scrappy and relentless. They did a great job extending rallies. We need to continue to serve and pass better. Tommorow is a new day, and we have another chance to get better."
