MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. – The University of Delaware softball team opened play at the EMU Madeira Beach Invitational on Friday by falling to Nicholls, 4-2, and Kent State, 8-0 in five innings.

In the Blue Hens’ first game of the day, Nicholls (6-2) opened the scoring in the top of the third by pushing across two runs on a Delaware error. Kelsey Miller doubled home another run in the top of the sixth inning for the Colonels, before Amanda Gianelloni added a solo homer in the seventh.

Delaware (0-6) rallied in the bottom of the seventh, as Anna Steinmetz led off with a walk and Giovanna Kolofer followed with an RBI double. Two outs later Chayanna Gallardo (left) singled home Kolofer to make it a 4-2 game and the Blue Hens had the tying runs on base following a Sarah Coyne single, but Leanna Gearhart (below) struck out to end the game.

The Blue Hens and Kent State (5-1) were scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning, before the Golden Flashes erupted for eight runs. 

Vanessa Vodan opened the scoring with an RBI single, while Holly Speers broke the game open with a three-run double. Allie Luther added a two-run homer in the frame, before Jade Williams capped the rally with a sacrifice fly.

Reyna de Jesus, Mariah Kondravy and Ali Davis had the three Delaware hits, while Sarah Piening took the loss in the circle.

• Delaware played Nicholls for the first time in school history, and fell to 0-3 all-time vs. Kent State
