Delaware Women’s Cross Country to Host 28 Teams Saturday for Annual Delaware Invitational
NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware will play host to 28 intercollegiate and club men’s and women’s cross country teams this Saturday, Sept. 14, when the Blue Hens present the annual Delaware Invitational at White Clay Creek State Park.
The women’s six-kilometer race will begin at 10:30 a.m. followed by the men’s eight-kilometer competition at 11:15 a.m.
The race is free and open to the public but there is a nominal fee to enter the park, which is located on Route 896 north, just south of the Maryland and Pennsylvania state lines.
Women’s teams scheduled to compete are Delaware, Bryn Mawr, Cairn, Camden County College, Delaware Tech, Gettysburg, Goldey Beacom, Hood, Immaculata, Penn Running Club, Princeton, St. Vincent’s, Seton Hall, Towson, University of Delaware Sciences, and Wilmington University.
Men’s teams set to compete are Bryn Mawr, Cairn, Camden County College, Delaware Tech, Delaware Track Club, Gettysburg, Goldey Beacom, Hood, Immaculata, Penn Running Club, Princeton, Seton Hall, University of the Sciences, and Wilmington University.
Delaware is the defending women’s Division I race team champion while Gettysburg is the defending Division II/III team champion. Delaware’s Lindsay Prettyman, a senior on this year’s Blue Hen squad, is the defending women’s champion after covering the course in a winning time of 22:51.88 a year ago.
The Delaware Track club captured the men’s Division I title in 2012 while Gettysburg won the men’s Division II/III title. Steve Vincent, a former Delaware standout, won last year’s individual title with a time of 26:48.07 competing as an unattached runner.
The Delaware women, led by second-year head coach Wendy McFarlane, will be competing for just the second time this season after opening the campaign with a 4-1 dual meet record at the Mt. St. Mary’s 5K Duals held Aug. 30 in Emmitsburg, Md. Prettyman, a native of Newark, Del., led the Blue Hens with a fourth place overall finish.
