Delaware Cross Country Places Second at Towson Invitational; Three Blue Hens Finish in Top 10 (Sept. 22, 2013)

COCKEYSVILLE, Md.  --  The University of Delaware women’s cross country picked up its second straight impressive second place finish Saturday as the Blue Hens placed three runners in the top 10 at the Towson Invitational at Oregon Ridge Park Saturday morning.

Delaware, which is ranked No. 13 in the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Region, earned 42 total points to finish second, just seven points behind team champion and Colonial Athletic Association rival James Madison.

Oregon Ridge will be the site of the 2013 CAA Championships on Nov. 2 and Saturday’s meet feature six CAA teams competing.

“The ladies had a great race today,” said Delaware head coach Wendy McFarlane. “Running against conference teams and showing up the way we did was a good sign for future races. We had a lot of personal best performance again this week. I am so very proud of the team's effort  and the success we've had so far this season.”

College of Charleston was third in the team standings followed by host Towson, UNCW, Morgan State, Hofstra, District of Columbia, and Bowie State.

Prettyman led the Hens for the third time in three outings this season, for the 14th straight meet, and for the 17th time in the last 18 races as she placed third overall with a  time of 17:59.80 over the five-kilometer course. Teammate Emily Gispert was right behind in fourth place with a time of 18:10.55, and Alyssa Kennedy was the Hens’ third top 10 finish with an eighth place showing in 18:30.02.

Other Delaware finishers in the top 20 were Shannon Kelly (13th/18:41.61), Meredith Steenkamer (14th/18:43.54), and Katrina Steenkamer (15th/18:45.99).

Delaware will take next week off before returning to action Oct. 5 at the Paul Short Invitational at Lehigh.
