NEWARK, Del. – Following the announcement of the National Academic Team Award recipients, NFHCA named 12 University of Delaware field hockey student-athletes to its National Academic Squad for their work in the classroom.

The 2013 Gladiator by SGI/NFHCA National Academic Squad honors individuals who have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher during the first semester of the 2013-14 year, which is possibly the busiest time of the year for these student-athletes as they are amidst their championship season.

“It took a team effort to once again be recognized as a National Academic Team, but it takes a true commitment and investment of our student-athletes to secure GPAs that results in our 2013 fall semester team GPA of a 3.35,” stated head coach Rolf van de Kerkhof.

Six freshmen (Taylor Meily, Maddie O’Beirne, Fran Orella, Marjelle Scheffers, Meghan Winesett, Maura Zarkoski), two sophomores (Janell Holmes, Morgan Hudson), one junior (Kelsey McKee) and three seniors (Clare O’Malley, Kasey Prettyman, Sarah Scher) on the list represented Delaware.

O’Malley, Prettyman and Scher were also all honored as four-year award recipients.

“On behalf of the University of Delaware field hockey program, I am very excited to congratulate Janell, Morgan, Kelsey, Taylor, Maddie, Clare, Fran, Kasey, Marjelle, Sarah, Meghan and Maura on their outstanding academic performance this past semester,” exclaimed Van de Kerkhof.  “These 12 student-athletes represent the highest number of Blue Hens players ever listed on a National Academic Squad list to date.  The future of UD field hockey looks bright with the recent successes in the classroom and on the field, and even more importantly, the understanding on how to prepare for and pursue excellence in the semesters and seasons to come.”

Delaware posted a program-record 17 victories in 2013 in addition to earning both the CAA regular season and tournament championships en route to the fifth NCAA Tournament berth in school history.
