LEWISBURG, Pa. – The 16th ranked University Delaware field hockey team bounced back quickly from Friday’s shutout loss at #12 Penn State as the Hens held on for a 4-3 victory at Bucknell Sunday afternoon.

UD (6-2) came out of the gates right away and scored two quick goals within the first four minutes of play.  Senior Clare O’Malley (Summit, N.J.) posted the team’s first goal of the afternoon in the second minute off of an assist from freshman Meghan Winesett (Centreville, Va.).  Less than 60 seconds later, Winesett added her own goal from classmate Esmée Peet (Zeewolde, The Netherlands) on a penalty corner to give the Hens a 2-0 lead.

In the 32nd minute, Winesett collected another goal, this time a deflection off a pass from senior Toni Popinko (Oxford, N.J.) to go up, 3-1.  Sophomore Jacki Coveleski (Lewes, Del.) placed Delaware’s last goal of the day in the 48th minute off of a penalty corner and assist from senior Heather Hartman (Fredericksburg, Va.).

The Bison (4-4) collected two goals in the remaining 15 minutes of the game to cut UD’s advantage to 4-3, but the Blue Hen defense held on for the victory.

Senior goalie Sarah Scher (Pocomoke City, Md.) collected four saves in all 70 minutes of action.

POST-GAME QUOTES
Head Coach Rolf van de Kerkhof – “Today we were fortunate to walk away with a ‘W,’ but we didn’t present a winner’s performance.  Aside from a number of good moments as a team, the majority of the game we played as individuals and didn’t execute our game plan.  I’m glad we have a week to prepare for our next game as I know we need some time to refocus and get back on the same page of us playing Delaware Hockey as one team together.”
