Delaware Field Hockey Recognized by NFHCA for Academic Excellence
NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware field hockey squad had its most successful season on the field this past fall, but they also shined in the classroom as the Blue Hens were recognized Tuesday by the NFHCA as a National Academic Team Award recipient.
The award acknowledges those institutions that have achieved a Team GPA of 3.0 or higher during the first semester of the 2013-14 academic year.
“I am thrilled for our players group to be honored once again for their outstanding team GPA by the NFHCA,” remarked head coach Rolf van de Kerkhof. “I am very happy for our players as they have truly been living up to the expectation of what it means to be true student-athletes.”
Van de Kerkhof continued, “I am also excited to see two other Colonial Athletic Association programs being honored as a Top 5 performing team. Congratulations are in place to Hofstra and Drexel and it seems as though the CAA is on the right track when it comes to developing young women through the student-athlete and intercollegiate experience. The University of Delaware field hockey program is proud to be a part of a quality conference like the CAA.
Delaware posted a program-record 17 victories in 2013 in addition to earning both the CAA regular season and tournament championships en route to the fifth NCAA Tournament berth in school history.
During their championship season on the field, the Hens posted a fall semester GPA of 3.35 in the classroom.
“Aside from their academic and athletic achievements, our student-athletes are now enjoying community service programming with coaching weekly Special Olympics sessions and preparing for the Relay for Life later this spring,” Van de Kerkhof commented. “This is such a great group of youngsters to work with on a daily basis!”
The 2013 Gladiator by SGI/NFHCA Division I National Academic Squad will be released March 19 while the Scholars of Distinction will be awarded March 20.
