NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware field hockey squad continues to be honored for its dedication to academics as freshman Fran Orella (Whitehouse Station, N.J.) was named a Division I Scholar of Distinction by the NFHCA and Gladiator by SGI this past week.

Orella is one of eight student-athletes in the Colonial Athletic Association to earn this high honor in its first year of inception.

“I am excited that the NFHCA has added this new academic honor,” Delaware head coach Rolf van de Kerkhof commented.  “The Blue Hens are thrilled to be represented by Fran as she is a hard-working player who takes great pride in challenging and developing herself into a better student-athlete and contributing to her own and our team’s achievements and successes.”

Student-athletes who were named to the Gladiator by SGI/NFHCA Division I Scholars of Distinction achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.90 or higher through the first semester of the 2013-14 academic year, which is the heart of the championship field hockey season.

Delaware posted a program-record 17 victories in 2013 in addition to earning both the CAA regular season and tournament championships en route to the fifth NCAA Tournament berth in school history.
