NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware field hockey squad celebrated one of the most successful seasons in program history this past weekend at the team’s annual awards banquet.

During the banquet, the Hens received the prized possession of their Colonial Athletic Association rings and NCAA medallions while team accolades were also handed out.

As voted on by team members, the following were the award recipients:
     o   Most Valuable Player – Sarah Scher
     o   Defensive Player of the Year – Janell Holmes
     o   Offensive Player of the Year – Michaela Patzner
     o   Rookie of the Year – Esmée Peet
     o   Most Improved Player – Maddie O’Beirne
     o   Sportsmanship/Spirit Award – Morgan Hudson

The Blue Hens collected a program-record 17 victories in 2013 in addition to earning both the CAA regular season and tournament championships en route to the fifth NCAA Tournament berth in school history.  UD finished the season ranked No. 14 in the final NFHCA Coaches Poll.

Including the 17 wins, Delaware set or tied the school record in six total categories with 22 games played, 57 assists, assists by a freshman (Meghan Winesett; nine), points by a freshman (Peet; 32) and attendance at Rullo Stadium (4,493).

The team also boasted the NFHCA Mid-Atlantic Coach of the Year in Rolf van de Kerkhof, one NFHCA All-America Third Team selection (Patzner) and three All-Mid-Atlantic Region honorees (Patzner, Peet and Winesett). 

Furthermore, the Blue Hens received eight individual All-CAA honors, including the Player and Rookie of the Year (Peet) and CAA Co-Coach of the Year (Van de Kerkhof).

The evening concluded with emotional senior speeches and a video highlighting the historic season.
