Athlete photoPHOENIX, Md. -- The University of Delaware women’s golf team opens its third varsity season on Sunday and Monday when the Blue Hens compete in the Tignanelli Towson Invitational at the Towson Golf & Country Club.

The tournament, which will serve as Delaware’s season-opener for the third consecutive year, will be played on the par 72, 6,619-yard course and features 15 teams. In addition to Towson and Delaware, the field includes Bethune-Cookman, Central Connecticut, Delaware State, Fairfield, Fairleigh Dickinson, Hampton, Hartford, Hofstra, Long Island, Longwood, St. Francis (Pa.), Quinnipiac, and St. John’s.

The 36-hole tournament will feature one round on Sunday beginning at 11:30 a.m. with the final round beginning Monday at 8 a.m.

The Blue Hens are coming off a successful 2012-13 campaign, when the squad posted six top-10 finishes including a season-best fourth at the Tignanelli Towson Invitational under head coach Patty Post.

Delaware returns five letterwinners including junior Amanda Terzian (at right), last year’s Team MVP who averaged 80.76 shots per round and was the Blue Hens’ top finisher in three tournaments. She will be joined be classmate Andrea Slane, who posted a team-leading 78.88 average round during the 2012 fall season before sitting out the spring while recovering from shoulder surgery.

Sophomore Vimonthip Benjasupawan ranked third on the team with an 81.37 average round during her rookie season, while fellow Bangkok, Thailand native Baralee Theinthong is also back for her junior year after posting an 81.63 average a season ago. Sophomore Natalie Filler, who averaged 81.93 shots per round last year, and junior Annie Bowlsby, who recorded an 82.38 average round, also return for the Blue Hens.

Following its opening weekend at Towson, Delaware will head to the Princeton Invitational at Springdale Golf Club in Princeton, N.J. on Sept. 14-15. The Blue Hens will then take a month off before competing in the Rutgers Invitational at Rutgers Golf Course in Piscataway, N.J. on Oct. 14-15, before heading south to participate in the FIU/Pat Bradley Invitational at Lakewood Ranch Golf Course in Lakewood Ranch, Fla. on Oct. 20-22.

Delaware wraps up its fall season by hosting its first ever tournament, as the Blue Hens will participate in the University of Delaware Invitational at Rehoboth Beach Country Club in Rehoboth Beach, Del. on Oct. 26-27.
