Blue Hens in First Place, Grace Chua Fifth After First Day of Tignanelli Towson Invitational
PHOENIX, Md. -- The University of Delaware women’s golf team recorded a 308 score and leads the 14-team field on Sunday following the first day of the season-opening Tignanelli Towson Invitational.
The 308 team score is tied for the third lowest in program history for Delaware, which is beginning its third year as a varsity program. The Blue Hens enter Monday’s final round holding a four-shot lead over St. John’s, which sits in second place with a 312 score. Bethune-Cookman is currently third at 314, while Long Island is fourth at 314 and St. Francis (Pa.) rounds out the top five at 318.
Competing in her first career tournament, Blue Hen freshman Grace Chua carded a four over par 76 on the par 72, 6,139-yard course at the Towson Golf & Country Club, finishing the day in a tie for fifth place in the individual standings. Chua made 14 pars during her solid round of 38-38-76 to shoot Dellaware’s lowest round on Sunday.
Sophomore Vimonthip Benjasupawan and freshman Marie Bogenez each tied for 11th place with five over par 77 rounds, as well as junior Baralee Theinthong who was playing as an individual. Benjasupawan also had 14 pars during her opening round while Bogenez birdied 7, 12 and 18 in her first round as a Blue Hen. Theinthong made a team-high four birdies on the day on 3, 9, 10 and 12 during her opening round.
Freshman Vitoria Teixeira and junior Amanda Terzian each carded six over par rounds of 78, and will enter Monday’s action tied for 15th place. Teixeira birdied 3 and 12 in her collegiate debut, while Terzian recorded a birdie on 6 to go with 11 pars.
Playing as an individual, Delaware junior Annie Bowlsby birdied 18 during her 10 over par 82 opening round, putting her in a tie for 30th place.
Bethune-Cookman teammates Jennifer Hide and Andrea Orozco are tied for the individual lead at two over par 74, while two players are one shot back.
The second and final round of the Tignanelli Towson Invitational will begin Monday at 8 a.m.
