Delaware Basketball Tips Off 2013-14 Season with Festive Night at Hens Halloween Hoopla
NEWARK, Del. -- University of Delaware basketball fans and their families helped the Blue Hens men’s and women’s basketball squads tip-off the upcoming 2013-14 season Tuesday night with the Hens Halloween Hoopla at the Bob Carpenter Center.
Children in Halloween costumes and fans anxious to get a first-look at this year’s Blue Hens squad enjoyed a festive evening that included games, bounce houses, crafts, a mini-dunk contest, and a best costume contest for the kids and the introduction of the 2013-14 Delaware men’s and women’s squads followed by a pair of intrasquad scrimmages.
A dunk contest for the men’s team - won by Tommy Williams - and a game of “BOO” between the men’s and women’s teams - won by assistant coach Tiara Malcom and freshman Hannah Jardine from the women’s team - were also held.
In addition, the UD cheerleading and dance teams had the chance to show-off their routines for the upcoming season.
Following the event, fans had the chance to meet and mingle with members of both teams with UD student-athletes signing autographs.
The event was hosted by Voice of the Blue Hens Scott Klatzkin and UD Director of Athletics Multimedia Jimmy Smith.
“Tonight was a great event and we really appreciate all of our fans coming out and supporting us,”said Delaware women’s basketball head coach Tina Martin, led the Blue Hens to a 32-4 record and a berth in the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 a year ago. “Our players and coaches had a terrific time and we loved being able to interact with all of our fans. We cannot wait for our season to start and to see all of these faces in the Bob again. Go Blue Hens!"
“It was fantastic to see the fan support for our Halloween event tonight,” said Delaware senior guard Devon Saddler, a first-team All-Colonial Athletic Association selection who returns as one of the top backcourt players in the nation. “We really appreciate everybody coming out, and look forward to seeing them back at the Carpenter Center during our games this season.”
The Delaware men, who advanced to the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament semifinals a year ago, will open the season Nov. 8 at Richmond before returning to the BCC for the home opener on Sunday, Nov. 10, against Charleston Southern at 2 p.m. The two-time defending CAA champion Blue Hen women will open the year Nov. 8 at Rhode Island before returning to the CAA for their home opener Nov. 12 vs. Temple.
