NEWARK, Del. -- University of Delaware junior running back Andrew Pierce, who accounted for three touchdowns in the Blue Hens' 47-22 Colonial Athletic Association football victory over Rhode Island Saturday at Delaware Stadium, is the National 5 & 10 Stores Inc. Best of the Blue Hens Athlete of the Week award for the period ending Oct. 22.
Pierce, a running back from Bridgeton, N.J. (Cumberland Regional High School), earns the award for the first time this season and for the second time in his career.
For his efforts vs. Rhode Island, Pierce was also honored as the Colonial Athletic Association Offensive Player of the Week.
After two consecutive losses followed by a bye week, No. 25 Delaware needed a win in a big way. And that's exactly what the Blue Hens got Saturday afternoon as they treated a Homecoming crowd to a solid offensive performance.
Senior quarterback Tim Donnelly, making his first start of the season due to an injury to starter Trent Hurley, hit on 19 of 27 passes for 191 yards and a touchdown and ran for another score and Pierce bounced back from a hamstring injury to rush for a season-high 141 yards and score three touchdowns to lead the way.
Pierce scored twice in the second quarter, running in from six yards out early in the stanza and adding a five-yard touchdown catch from Donnelly in the closing seconds to give Delaware a 26-7 lead at the break.
He later added a 14-yard scoring run with just under 10 minutes left to play that upped the Delaware cushion to 40-17. In addition to his 141 yards rushing, Pierce also caught three passes.
