RICHMOND, Va. -- Junior goalkeeper Borja Barbero of the University of Delaware men's soccer team earns his first career Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Player of the Week honoring after shutting out No. 7 UMBC in Delaware's 1-0 double overtime win at the Retriever Soccer Park on Oct. 1. A native of Valladolid, Spain, Barbero is in his first season at Delaware after spending two years Iona College.

Barbero earns the first league honor for the month of October and is the first goalkeeper to take home Player of the Week honors this season.

The junior led Delaware to its first-ever program win over an opponent ranked in the national top-10. Barbero stopped all six shots he faced to earn his third shutout of the 2013 campaign.  The last time UMBC was shutout was on Nov. 18, 2012 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament against top-seeded North Carolina.

In the win, Delaware handed UMBC its first loss of the 2013 season and snapped the Retriever's 18 game unbeaten streak.

Barbero currently ranks third in the CAA in saves (28), saves per game (3.50) and shutouts (3).

The junior is the first Delaware player who has been named Player of the Week this season but is the third student-athlete who has earned a weekly conference honor. Freshman Guillermo Delgado (Sept. 2, Sept. 9) and Jaime Martinez (Sept. 30) both have earned CAA Rookie of the Week honors this season.

"Borja has been fantastic for us this season. His work ethic and personal drive to be successful sets him apart from most of the players I have ever worked with at UD," said Blue Hens head coach Ian Hennessy. "He is constantly doing extra work and it is this that has seen him keep a clean sheet in 4 of the last 5 games. This honor is well deserved."

Barbero currently owns a 7-1 overall record while the squad has gone 8-1 in its first nine games. Delaware opens CAA play this Wednesday, Oct. 9 as the Blue Hens travel to Harrisonburg, Va. to take on James Madison. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
