NEWARK, Del. - Senior and sophomore midfielders Luke Oostdyk and Ben Sampson of the University of Delaware men’s soccer team were both selected to the CoSIDA/Captial One District II All-Academic Men's Soccer Team announced Thursday.

Delaware and the U.S. Naval Academy are the only two institutions that placed two members on the All-Academic first team for District II. All first-team selections are now eligible for Academic All-American accolades. Those teams will be announced later this month.

To be eligible for the award, student-athletes must carry a 3.3 or better grade point average, be a starter or key reserve, and have at least sophomore eligibility.  District II includes all NCAA Division I schools in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland West Virginia, Washington, D.C., and West Virginia. The teams are selected by a vote of sports information directors.

Sampson, a mechanical engineering major, led the District II first team with a perfect 4.0 GPA. Sampson is one of five student-athletes honored by CoSDIA as a mechanical engineering major. In 2012 Sampson was named to the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Academic Honor Roll as just a freshman.

Oostdyk, a honors student as a biochemistry major, has complied an impressive 3.85 GPA. The senior is the only first team recipient selected as a biochemistry major. Oostdyk is a two-time CAA Academic Honor Roll honoree and was also a 2012 CoSIDA Academic All-American nominee.

The duo of Blue Hen student-athletes receiving this prestigious academic honor marks the first time Delaware men’s soccer has had two players recognized during the same year. Oostdyk and Sampson are the first student-athletes to be honored since Kyle Davis was named Academic All-American in 2009.

Delaware men’s soccer, which currently owns a 12-4 record and has received votes in the national Top 30 poll this season, returns to the pitch for its last match of the regular season when the Hens travel to Hofstra Sunday, Nov. 3 for a 1 p.m. start.
