University of Delaware Menís Soccer Standout Guillermo Delgado Earns Spot on Top Drawer Soccer National Honors List
LONG BEACH, Calif.-- University of Delaware men’s soccer star Guillermo Delgado has been named to the Top Drawer Soccer preseason Best XI second team all-star squad.
The staff at TDS voted on the preseason squads, which took into account previous performance in college soccer as well as anticipated success during the upcoming season. Delgado was one of 33 NCAA Division I standouts selected to the three teams. TDS also selected an All-Freshman team as well.
Delgado, a sophomore forward who enjoyed an outstanding 2013 rookie season in which he became the first freshman in team history to earn All-American honors, tallied 35 points with 15 goals and 5 assists to help Delaware host its first NCAA Tournament match in over 40 years a year ago.
A native of Tres Cantos, Spain (Jose Luis Sampedro High School), Delgado quickly became one of nation’s elite college players. He was the lone Colonial Athletic Association student-athlete named to the Top Drawer teams.
“It’s an honor and well-deserved,” said University of Delaware men’s soccer coach Ian Hennessy, who has led his teams to two NCAA Tournament berths in the last three years. “It’s an important year for him. He has professional soccer ambitions and is likely to attract a lot of attention from opposition this season.”
Delgado started all 20 games for the Blue Hens in 2013 and fired 87 shots with 47 of them on goal. He was selected Freshman of the Year by College Sports Madness and was ranked as the No. 5 freshman in the nation by Top Drawer Soccer. He also was named first team All-South Atlantic Region, second team ECAC All-East, first team All-Colonial Athletic Association, and CAA Rookie of the Year.
He led all NCAA freshmen in goals scored and ranked No. 4 among all players in 2013 when he paced a Delaware offense that ranked No. 2 in the NCAA with 2.25 goals per game.
Delaware will begin preseason camp Aug. 14 and will plays its first scrimmage on Aug. 19 vs. Monmouth. The regular season opener is set for Aug. 29 vs. Sacred Heart and newly-named Stuart & Suzanne Grant Stadium.
