NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware women’s indoor track and field team opened the 2013 season with an outstanding showing Friday night as the Blue Hens captured six first place finishes to highlight the Delaware Invitational at the Delaware Field House.
The meet marked the season opener for the Blue Hen women, who also hosted Coppin State, Maryland Eastern Shore, and Saint Joseph’s in the four-team evening meet. The men’s competition included the Delaware Track Club and Saint Joseph’s.
Delaware received first place finishes from nine different student-athletes as Amira Idris won the long jump (17-8), Courtney Markow captured the pole vault 910-11 3/4), Latoya James (at right) won the 55 meter hurdles (8.11), Michele Lambert was the winner of the 3,000 meters (10:14.51), Lindsay Prettyman won the mile (5:03.94), and Toresha Foster, Nijah Dupiche, Kelley Donovan, and Alexandra Carroll teamed to take first place in the 4 x 400 meter relay with a time of 4:05.51.
James was the lone record-breaker on the night for Delaware as she shattered the school record in the 55 meter hurdles, racing to a winning time of 8.11. She broke the previous Blue Hen indoor mark of 8.45 set by Kayla Hennessy in 2008.
James already holds the UD indoor standard in the 60 meter hurdles at 8.55. James also finished third in the long jump with a leap of 17-1 1/2 during the meet Friday.
Idris (at left) posted three top three finishes for the Blue Hens as she also was second in the triple jump (38-9 3/4) and third in the 60 meters (7.96).
Also for the Hens, Foster was second in both the 200 meters (26.09) and high jump (5-3), Carroll was third in the 500 meters (1:20.83), and Prettyman was third in the 4 x 400 meter relay (4:09.34).
The Hens will continue action Jan. 12 when they travel to Annapolis, Md. to take part in the Navy Invitational.
