Blue Hen Softball Games at Coppin State Tournament Canceled; Delaware Will Play Two Sunday at Longwood Invitational
FARMVILLE, Va. -- The University of Delaware softball team had its weekend at the Coppin State Tournament canceled due to unplayable field conditions, although the Blue Hens have added two games on Sunday at the Longwood Invitational.
Delaware will now face Delaware State at 11 a.m. on Sunday at Lancer Field, before taking on host Longwood at 3:30 p.m.
The Blue Hens are 5-9 on the season, and will enter Sunday’s action riding a three-game winning streak after defeating Monmouth twice and Norfolk State once last weekend. Szymanski also fired a no-hitter last Saturday against Monmouth, the 15th in school history, and currently leads the squad with three victories in the circle.
Sophomore Kelly Lupton has also been impressive during her first season with the Blue Hens, holding a 2-2 record with a team-best 2.66 earned run average.
Delaware State is 5-2 on the young season, defeating CAA opponent Drexel twice at the East Carolina Pirate Snow Classic before winning all three of its games at the Norfolk State Spartan Clash on Feb. 22-23. Jordan Stamps leads the Hornets with a .400 batting average, eight hits and seven RBI on the season, while Sandy Hawthorne is hitting .389 with seven his and a team-high six runs scored. Longwood enters the weekend with a 6-4 mark, although the Lancers have defeated Big Ten foes Indiana and Iowa while dropping a tough 1-0 decision at seventh-ranked Arizona State during their last contest.
Emily Murphy is batting .462 with team-highs of 12 hits, 12 runs scored, seven RBI and seven stolen bases to pace the Longwood attack, while Chelsea Sciacca is hitting .440 to go with six doubles and seven runs batted in.
