NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware softball attempted to rally during the late innings against Villanova, but the Blue Hens fell just short in dropping a 4-2 decision to the Wildcats Sunday afternoon during the final game of the UD Spring Invitational.

Delaware (7-13) fell behind 4-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth, but got on the board when Michelle McKinnon laced a double to leftcenter before pinch runner Morgan Schroll scored on a wild pitch. The Blue Hens added a second run the following frame when Gabby Klecko singled and came around to score on a double by Jessica Grisler.

Sarah Bencivenga reached on an error while Giovanna Kolofer singled to right to put the tying runs on base with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but Wildcats pitcher Kate Poppe got Shelby Jones to pop out to shortstop to end the game.

The Wildcats (8-12) jumped ahead in the top of the first inning, as Shea Palmer scored on a wild pitch before Chase Snell crossed the plate on and RBI groundout by Stephanie Butler.

Poppe scored when Ali Lowe reached on an error by McKinnon in the top of the second, while the Wildcats added a run in the third when Butler doubled home Sierra McConnell.

Villanova starter Katie Sitzman improved to 2-3 after allowing two runs on three hits in 5.1 innings of work, while Poppe picked up her first save of the year after firing 1.2 scoreless innings of relief. Blue Hen starter Carolyn Szymanski fell to 4-7 for the Blue Hens after giving up four runs, three earned, in three innings of work.

Delaware returns home on Wednesday to host Saint Joseph’s in a 3 p.m. doubleheader at the UD Softball Stadium.
