LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. -- Blue Hen freshman third baseman Giovanna Kolofer had six hits and six RBI on the day while sophomore Kiersten Coffman earned both wins in the circle as the University of Delaware softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader at Rider, 12-4 and 3-1, Wednesday afternoon at Herb and Joan Young Field.

Delaware, which improved to 21-19 following the pair of wins, pounded out 12 hits in the opener while posting its second highest run total of the season. The Blue Hens scored twice in the top of the first inning of the opener, as Kolofer singled home Jessica Grisler before she crossed the plate on a double by Carolyn Szymanski. Kolofer then tripled home Gabby Klecko in the third, while Grisler’s RBI single highlighted a three-run fourth as Delaware extended its lead to 6-0.

Michelle McKinnon delivered a two-run single in the fifth, chasing home Lisa Stacevicz and Hannah George to make it an eight-run game. Meanwhile Coffman retired the first 12 batters she faced, before Megan McDonough drilled a three-run homer in the bottom of the fifth to put the Broncs on the board.

However Delaware put the game out of reach by adding four runs in the seventh, as Brittney Noons scored on a Rider error before Kolofer cracked a three-run shot to left for her first home run as a Blue Hen.

Coffman won her third game of the season after she allowed three runs and struck out six batters in five innings of work, while Taylor Curran gave up one run in the final two frames. Broncs pitcher Delany DeMello gave up all 12 runs, just five earned, on 12 hits while dropping to 2-9 on the year.

Kolofer paced the UD offense by finishing 3 for 5 with five RBI and two runs scored, while Grisler and Stacevicz each recorded two hits during the win.

The Blue Hens again struck first in the opening inning during the nightcap, as Grisler led off with a walk and eventually scored on a bunt single by Kolofer. However Rider, which dropped to 4-29 on the year, answered right back in the bottom half when Gina McCool singled home Dana Sensi.

The teams remained knotted at 1-1 until the top of the sixth inning, when Delaware pushed across two runs to take the lead for good. Heather Oakley led off the frame with a double to left, and after pinch runner Morgan Schroll moved to third on a sacrifice bunt, she scored when McKinnon ripped a double to left. George then replaced McKinnon on the bases, and she came around to score on an RBI double to right by Tori Conrad.

Coffman then shut down the Broncs in the final two innings, as she picked up her second victory of the day while improving to 4-2 on the campaign. Coffman gave up four hits in three scoreless frames, after UD starter Kelly Lupton was charged with one run on three hits in four innings of work. Broncs pitcher Megan McDonough went the distance for Rider, falling to 0-3 after she surrendered three earned runs on seven hits.

Kolofer again led the way offensively for the Blue Hens by finishing 3 for 4 with an RBI while Grisler, Conrad, McKinnon and Oakley added a hit apiece.

Delaware returns home on Saturday when the Blue Hens host Hofstra in a 12 noon CAA doubleheader at the UD Softball Stadium.
