RICHMOND, Va. -- University of Delaware freshman shortstop Sarah Bencivenga was named the Colonial Athletic Association Softball Rookie of the Week on Monday following an impressive five-game stretch to end the Blue Hens’ regular season.

Bencivenga, a native of Toms River, N.J. (Toms River East), led Delaware with six hits, five runs scored, two home runs and five RBI while batting .400 on the week. She delivered an RBI single and scored a run during Wednesday’s 4-1 win over Saint Peter’s, and added two singles while crossing the plate twice in the 3-2 triumph over the Peacocks in the nightcap of the doubleheader.

Bencivenga then drilled two homers and singled home another run to finish 3 for 4 with four RBI during Sunday’s season finale at James Madison. Bencivenga became the first Blue Hen two hit two longballs in a game since Shanette White also belted two at JMU on Apr. 2, 2010.

Bencivenga, who shared CAA Rookie of the Week honors with College of Charleston pitcher Samantha Martin, started all 48 games at shortstop for Delaware during her freshman campaign. She finished second on the team with 42 hits and 20 runs scored, tied for the team lead with 12 stolen bases, and ranked fourth with 16 RBI while batting .286 on the year.

Bencivenga is the third Blue Hen to earn CAA Rookie of the Week honors this season, along with Carolyn Szymanski on Mar. 4 and Giovanna Kolofer on Mar. 31.
