NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware softball team will play eight games including six at home during its 2014 fall exhibition schedule, fifth-year head coach Jaime Wohlbach has announced.

The Blue Hens will open their fall slate on Sunday, Sept. 21 when Delaware hosts Villanova in a 12 noon doubleheader at the UD Softball Stadium. Delaware remains home the following Sunday, Sept. 28, to face Kutztown in another 12 noon twinbill.

The Blue Hens will play their lone road games of the fall on Sunday, Oct. 5 as Delaware takes on Princeton in a doubleheader beginning at 12 noon. UD then closes out the fall season on Sunday, Oct. 12 with a 12 noon home twinbill against in-state rival Delaware State.

Delaware returns 15 letterwinners and nine starters from last season’s squad that finished 23-25 overall and was 5-12 in the Colonial Athletic Association.

Rising senior Jessica Grisler paced the Blue Hens with a .340 batting average last spring while third baseman Giovanna Kolofer was named to the second team All-CAA and CAA All-Rookie squads after leading the squad with 51 hits, 31 runs scored, nine doubles and 24 RBI.

Shortstop Sarah Bencivenga, who hit .286 with 20 runs scored and 12 stolen bases, and pitcher/designated player Carolyn Szymanski, who belted a team-high four home runs and won 12 games in the circle, also joined Kolofer on the conference All-Rookie squad.

Junior outfielders Gabby Klecko, Hannah George and Shelby Jones also return along with classmate Lisa Stacevicz and sophomore catcher Danielle Wissinger, while the Blue Hens welcome eight newcomers as UD looks to return to postseason play next spring.
