ORLANDO, Fla. -- The University of Delaware softball team dropped its first game on Saturday at the Diamond 9 Citrus Classic, falling to Marshall, 8-3, in a game twice delayed by rain at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.

The Thundering Herd (2-6) loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the first, and after Blue Hen pitcher Carolyn Szymanski caught a line drive off the bat of Raquel Escareno, she made a wild throw that allowed two runners to score.

The Blue Hens (2-6) drew even by piecing together a two-out rally in the top of the fourth inning. Tori Conrad ignited the rally with a walk, while a walk to Szymanski and a single by Danielle Wissinger loaded the bases. Jessica Grisler then laced a two-run single, driving home pinch runners Morgan Schroll and Abby Cline to knot the contest at 2-2.

Marshall regained the lead for good during the bottom of the fifth, as after the Thundering Herd loaded the bases with two outs, Kristina Braxton cleared the bases with a double to make it a 5-2 game.

Delaware got a run right back in the sixth when Szymanski led off with a single, moved to second on a Wissinger single, and scored on another single by Grisler. But Marshall put the game away with three runs in the bottom half of the frame, highlighted by an RBI single by Katalin Lucas and a run-scoring double by Shaelynn Braxton.

Szymanski took the loss in the circle for Delaware after allowing eight runs, six earned, on 15 hits in five-plus innings of work.

The Blue Hens' second game of the day against No. 17 Georgia was postponed due to rain.
