HONOLULU, Hawaii -- The 13th-ranked UCLA softball team scored five runs in the first inning and cruised from there as the Bruins posted a 10-0 victory over the University of Delaware in both teams’ 2014 season opener Thursday at the Oceanic Time Warner Cable Paradise Classic hosted by Hawai’i.

The Bruins, who advanced to the NCAA Tournament last season, broke the game open early by scoring five runs on just two hits in the bottom of the first inning.

After UCLA loaded the bases with one out following a hit batter and two walks, a pair of runs scored when Brittany Moeai reached on an error by Blue Hen second baseman Michelle McKinnon. Jessica Hall then doubled down the leftfield line to drive home two more, while she crossed the plate when Alyssa Tiumalo ripped a double to center.

The Bruins tacked on two more runs with two outs in the second, as Hall drew a bases loaded walk before Tiumalu delivered an RBI single to left. Delaney Spaulding singled home a run in the third inning, before Mysha Sataraka knocked home two more to make it a 10-0 game. Kelly Lupton then replaced UD starter Carolyn Szymanski in the circle for the Blue Hens, and retired the next two batters to end the frame.

UCLA pitcher Ally Carda hurled a five-inning no-hitter, allowing just two walks on the afternoon to Blue Hen sophomores Lisa Stacevicz and Shelby Jones.

Szymanski allowed all 10 runs, eight earned, on six hits while walking eight batters in 2.1 innings of work during her Blue Hen debut. Lupton gave up just one hit in 1.2 frames of scoreless relief for Delaware, which was playing its fourth ranked opponent in school history.

The Blue Hens continue action at the tournament on Friday when they face Hampton at 7 p.m. ET and the host Rainbow Wahine at 11 p.m. ET.
