NORFOLK, Va. -- University of Delaware freshman Carolyn Szymanski fired a no-hitter during the opener while sophomore Kelly Lupton allowed just one run in the nightcap as the Blue Hens defeated Monmouth, 8-0, and Norfolk State, 3-2, Sunday afternoon on the final day of the NSU Spartan Classic.

Szymanski recorded the 15th no-hitter in Delaware history with the five-inning effort against the Hawks (1-2), walking just one and hitting one batter. She struck out nine during her third win of the season, firing the first no-hitter by a Blue Hen since Lindsay Jones against Lehigh on Mar. 22, 2006.

Szymanski also provided the only offense she would need by leading off the bottom of the third inning with a solo homer to leftfield. After Jessica Grisler singled and Sarah Bencivenga was hit by a pitch, both runners came around to score when Heather Oakley delivered a two-run double down the leftfield line.

Delaware, which improved to 5-9 following the pair of victories, then put the game away by scoring five runs in the bottom of the fourth. Shelby Jones and Michelle McKinnon opened the frame with singles, before Szymanski ripped a two-run double to left as the Blue Hens increased their lead to five. Later in the frame Grisler singled up the middle to chase home pinch runner Abby Cline, while Gabby Klecko crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by Danielle Wissinger. Grisler then stole third and scored on a throwing error by Monmouth catcher Jill Freese to close the scoring.

Szymanski, who improved to 3-6 in the circle, finished 2 for 3 with three RBI at the plate for the Blue Hens. Grisler was 3 for 3 with a pair of runs scored, while Oakley finished with two hits and two RBI during the victory. Monmouth starter Breanna Sniffen took the loss after allowing seven earned runs on eight hits in three plus innings of work.

During the Blue Hens’ nightcap, Norfolk State (2-8) opened the scoring during the bottom of the first inning when Liz Riley worked a bases loaded walk. Delaware pulled even in the top of the third when Grisler drew a two-out walk, moved to second on a single to right by Wissinger, and scored when Bencivenga ripped an RBI single down the rightfield line.

Lisa Stacevicz then led off the top of the fourth with an infield single, while Jones reached on an error to put two runners on base. Following a sacrifice bunt by McKinnon, Szymanski drove home both runners with a double to left, putting the Blue Hens in front 3-1.

Alina Moriarty got a run back for the Spartans by drilling a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth, but Lupton allowed just one single and one walk from there to close out the victory.

Lupton pitched the final 6.2 innings, allowing just one run on three hits while improving to 2-2 in the circle for Delaware. Szymanski finished 2 for 3 with the two RBI at the plate, while Wissinger also had two hits during the victory. Jamie Schulle went the distance for the Spartans, allowing three runs, one earned, on eight hits while dropping to 2-4 on the campaign.

Delaware, which has now won three straight games, will look to continue its momentum next weekend at the Coppin State Tournament. The Blue Hens open play in Baltimore on Friday with a 12:15 p.m. game against Rider and a 4:45 p.m. contest with Buffalo.
