Blue Hen Sophomore Kyle Martin Ties For 10th Place at 97th Pennsylvania State Open Championship

HORSHAM, Pa. -- Playing against the best players in the state, University of Delaware men’s golfer Kyle Martin posted an impressive week of golf to tie for 10th place at the 97th Pennsylvania State Open Championship held this Monday and Wednesday.

Martin, a native of Ambler, Pa., took advantage of playing on his home course of Commonwealth National Golf Club to card a five over par 70-72-76-218 and finish second among the amateurs in the 120-man field.

Martin opened the tournament on Monday with a one under par 70 on the par 71, 7,117-yard course, recording five birdies during the round. He then played a pair of rounds on Wednesday, opening with a one under par 72 which featured birdies on the first two holes of the course. Playing in swirling, persistent winds, Martin concluded play with a five over par 76 which included a birdie on the 11th hole.

Martin placed second among the 49 amateurs at the championship, finishing behind only Georgetown junior Greg Podufal, who shot a three over par 216.

Martin, a rising sophomore who appeared in all but one tournament during his rookie season with the Blue Hens in 2012-13, ranking third on the squad with a 77.54 average round. He was Delaware’s top finisher at the UNCW Seahawk Intercollegiate, while his second round of 68 at the Joe Agee Invitational was tied for the lowest round by a Blue Hen during the season.
