WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – For their final time as collegiate student-athletes, seniors Troy Beneck (Wilmington, Del.) and Adam Lawton (Estepona, Spain) will guide the University of Delaware men’s tennis team as the Blue Hens compete in the Colonial Athletic Association Championships this weekend.

The seventh-seeded Hens will face first-year CAA opponent and No. 2 seed College of Charleston at 9 a.m. Friday at the College of William & Mary’s Millie West Tennis Facility.

With a win, Delaware would advance to meet either No. 3 William & Mary or No. 6 Hofstra at 10 a.m. Saturday.  The CAA men’s championship match is set for 10 a.m. Sunday.

The Blue Hens have never won the CAA title and last won a conference championship during the 1996-97 season when Delaware clinched the America East crown.

Beneck (at right) and Lawton (below left), arguably two of the best players to ever wear the Blue Hens uniform, hope to continue to change history.

Individually, the pair already holds every major mark in the Delaware record books and look for that success to result in a team championship.

Beneck, UD’s top-flight competitor and career-record holder, is currently 23-7 on the year and has won two straight for the Blue Hens going in to tournament action.

In No. 2 singles action, Lawton is on the edge of his second-straight 20-win season with a mark of 19-9.

As a doubles duo, the pair is 21-5 in the top flight with a record career mark of 63-21.  Beneck and Lawton have also won six consecutive for Delaware.

As a team, the Blue Hens finished the regular season with a record of 4-10 while going 0-4 in conference play.

The Cougars, who are ranked 66th nationally, have a 16-5 overall record and have won five straight matches. Senior Brice Allanic anchors the top of CofC’s lineup and freshman Rodrigo Encinas and senior Crescente Lesser have turned in strong seasons in singles while going undefeated as a tandem in doubles.
