ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The United States Naval Academy proved to be too much for the University of Delaware men’s tennis team as the Midshipmen cruised by the Blue Hens, 7-0, Saturday afternoon at the Tose Family Tennis Center.

The loss marked the fourth straight for Delaware, which falls to 2-4 on the season while Navy improved to 6-4 overall.

Seniors Troy Beneck (Wilmington, Del.) and Adam Lawton (Estepona, Spain) held things close in top flight doubles play, but eventually fell, 8-6, to Thomas Pecor and Austin Jones.  The Mids also took victories in No. 2 and No. 3 doubles for the team point.

Beneck and Lawton both forced their opponents into three-set tiebreakers in singles action, but were unable to pick up wins.  Beneck fell, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, to Calvin Mark in No. 1 singles while

Lawton lost a close one to Austin Jones, 4-6, 6-4, 11-9.

Sophomore Tim Puterio (Kingston, R.I.) posted the closest match of the afternoon in a heartbreaking 6-7 (9-7), 6-1, 13-11 defeat to Alex Gaines.

POST-MATCH QUOTES
Head Coach Laura Travis
“We competed hard against a solid Navy squad, but we just couldn’t convert today.  Our players are making progress, but it is difficult when this does not produce results.  This will, however, prepare us for our first conference match next weekend against Hofstra.”
